GENERATIONS OF CRAFTSMANSHIP
Hardwood Groves is a family-owned business founded by Jack and his daughter Sam. They carry forward the legacy of Jack's father, a skilled woodworker, and Jack’s mother, an interior design educator within home economics.
In 2020, as the world shifted to working from home, Sam, residing in a small Brooklyn apartment, found a need for a versatile coffee table that could double as a desk. This necessity sparked a creative journey for Jack and Sam, leading to the creation of Hardwood Groves. They started by designing multifunctional pieces that maximize space efficiency and adapt to various needs. Using fallen trees from their family farm, Jack and Sam craft beautiful, practical furniture that combines Jack's woodworking expertise with Sam's artistic vision.
Jack, an engineer by trade, and Sam, a designer and visual artist, bring a perfect blend of functionality and aesthetics to their work. Their collaboration has led to various projects, including outdoor furniture, kitchen tables, coffee tables, dining nooks, standing desks, and accessory items like toys and frames. Each piece is a testament to their commitment to practicality, sustainability, and beauty.
The wood used for the furniture is sourced directly from the family’s Anderson Hollow Farms located in middle Tennessee. The farm has been in the Anderson family since 1850. Mature Walnut, Red Oak, and Cedar logs are milled into lumber by Jack and the rest of the family team at Anderson Hollow Farms. This lumber is then dried to specific moisture content targets using an on-site solar kiln or an air drying process. From there, the wood is ready to be transformed into a timeless piece of furniture.
A FAMILY BUSINESS
Jack and Sam's creations are brought to life with the support of the whole family. Jack’s wife, JoAnn, handles packaging and logistics, ensuring each piece arrives safely to its new home. Meanwhile, Jack’s son, Brandon, manages business strategy and marketing, helping to expand their reach and impact. Together, the team at Hardwood Groves transforms the natural beauty of their farm's resources into functional, artful pieces, honoring their heritage while meeting the modern needs of their customers.
The name Hardwood Groves is a tribute to the Robert Frost poem In Hardwood Groves, a reflection on strength and renewal within the lifecycle of trees.
In Hardwood Groves
The same leaves over and over again!
They fall from giving shade above
To make one texture of faded brown
And fit the earth like a leather glove.
Before the leaves can mount again
To fill the trees with another shade,
They must go down past things coming up.
They must go down into the dark decayed.
They must be pierced by flowers and put
Beneath the feet of dancing flowers.
However it is in some other world
I know that this is way in ours.
